Gulliver member Joshua D. McGraw (CR CNRS) is among 20 French researchers to be awarded a 2024 Horizon Europe Consolidator Grant. During the project named NoDiCE (Non-Equilibrium Diffusion in Complex Environments), the team aims to construct a new class experimental systems designed to include the essential ingredients of realisting microscopic systems including from microscopic biology and chemical nanotechnology. Namely, the ingredients at play are non-equilibrium diffusive motions and non-equilibrium spatial self-organization. These will be produced by chemical reactivity and near-surface flows, embedded in formulations notably containing soft matter building blocks. By taking such a general approach, NoDiCE aims to generate a new class of model physical systems, containing all of the hallmarks of microscopic life and nanotechnology.

During NoDiCE, non-equilibrium situations to be studied will include emergent hydrodynamic interactions, chemical reactivity, and tunable surface binding. Each of these ingredients are important in common situations involving microscopic transport of nanoscale objects.
